The context
The persecution of people affected by albinism is a phenomenon that involves at least 25 African countries. The incidence rate of mutilation and killing in Tanzania is particularly high and it represents one of the main challenges the country is facing in terms of human rights violations.
These violent crimes are often the result of myths and superstitions. Ignorance and lack of access to health care have in fact contributed to the spread of beliefs according to which people affected by albinism have healing powers and their body parts confer fortune and success to those who possess them.
Our objective and our intervention
For fighting this phenomenon it is necessary to tackle the root causes of the problem, fighting ignorance, discrimination and impunity.
Project activities include the strengthening of legal protection, the inclusion of civil society organizations in the definition of policies and the provision of services, the promotion of social change towards people affected by albinism.
